For the New Players
Welcome to EV! If you're new here, you may have taken a first look at our front page and found yourself at a loss for what to do next. Below is a list of links that may help you get started out on the MUSH.
Creating, Connecting, Roleplaying
Trying to create a character, connect to the MUSH, or learn how to RP? Check out our Walkthrough. Clicking that link will take you to a step-by-step guide from connecting to the MUSH for the first time to putting your character on the grid and learning your first scene. Already know how to connect and RP, but aren't sure how to create a character? No problem. You can choose which step fits for you based on your existing knowledge of MU*s.
Roleplaying a Scene
Already on the grid, but not sure how to involve yourself in a scene, or what to do once you're there? Who poses first? Do you pose in turn? Take a look at our Scene Guide to answer these questions. Also recommended for older players.
Learning the Theme
Trying to get a grasp of the basic theme? Want to know where you should start? Try Theme Overview and Recommended Pages.
Getting Human Help
Rather talk to a human being than a wiki? Log onto the MUSH as a guest (instructions) and type +new <message> to speak to whoever's logged in. You can also send an email to the staff account at Elan.Vital.Staff@gmail.com
Browsing the Wiki
If you just want to browse the wiki and see what's out there, head to the Index. Every page in our wiki is categorized, and every category is categorized to the Index, so from there you can head to whatever strikes your fancy. You can also type in key words in the search bar on the left side of your screen to search for specific information.
Using the In-Game Help System
You can also access the wiki in-game via the +wiki command, which accesses pages according to their page name. For instance, +wiki Help pulls up this page. +wiki Category:Index provides the index. There is unfortunately no search capability built into the in-game help system. A link to each page can be found at the bottom of a help file.
Skill System
For information on gaining XP, raising and lowering skills, and adjusting your +sheet, see Skill System.
FAQ
You can read our FAQ here.
Rules
A list of our rules for players can be found here, and those for staffers (the same as those for players, plus some) are available here.
General Tips
Editing the Wiki
Here you can find instructions to creating and editing pages on the wiki. You can only edit pages if you have a confirmed account (sometimes getting an account can be troublesome--if you have problems, poke staff). Please use this ability wisely.
Involving Yourself in Plots and RP
The best way to go about involving yourself in the thick of the action is really to communicate. When you look at the Where, anyone on the IC grid is signaling themselves as up for RP. You can meet any of them for a scene. You can also use +meet <player> to travel to the location of a specific individual--you will be provided with options to either bring that player to you, or to go yourself to meet the player upon receiving a +meet.
When it is a question of how to become involved in a plot, the easiest thing to do is to A) attend the scheduled events pertaining to that plot, B) ICly seek a way to involve yourself, and/or C) OOCly contact the individual running the plot, be it player or staffer, and inquire as to how best you can involve yourself. People are usually very receptive to helping you participate.
Posting Logs
To post a log of a scene on the wiki, first make sure that you're allowed to do so. If the scene is a scheduled event or contains four or more players, it's fair game. If it is not scheduled and contains three or fewer players, make sure the players don't mind your posting the scene--especially if the scene is anything that might be considered "private".
After you're certain you can share the log, post it on the wiki according to this format. Make certain to categorize the log properly, and remember to link it to the correct season page.
Running Player Plots
If you're interested in running a player plot, by all means, feel free to do so. Players are welcomed to run any plot that does not touch one of these items. If you ever aren't sure of whether or not you can run a particular plot, you probably can, but run it by staff first by posting a +str in-game.
Making Suggestions
Players are always welcome to make suggestions to our code, theme, systems, etc. To do this, simply post a +str in-game or make the suggestion on the forums, and it will be discussed and considered with you.
Obtaining Nobility and Promotions
Obtaining nobility or promotions on EV is a purely IC matter. Nobility is granted to a commoner by House Petakova or House Stocklin for outstanding service. In Petakova, it's most easily (but not only) obtained by powerful Celestians. In Stocklin, particularly brilliant scientists. There are other ways, but these are the professions that most readily catch the eyes of the Houses.
News
You can keep up-to-date on the in-character happenings by reading the articles posted on the IC News bulletin board in game. You can even write news yourself, and post it to the Gossip or Crank boards if you like. Just be warned--Gossip and Crank are meant to be taken with a grain of salt.
Differences Between EV and Real Life
The differences between EV and modern culture in real life can be found clearly laid out here.
Character Building
There are a number of character building opportunities available to players to help them get to know their characters better. Characters develop naturally, of course, simply through scenes. You can also find character-building questions here on our forums. You can also start character journals which can be read by other players (though the information contained within them is strictly OOC) and write short stories about your characters, which you can post here.
