History
The museum is one of the older extant buildings of Titania, dating back nearly to the beginning of the colony's history. It was founded in the year 118 AT, after the Amera for whom it was named perished in an attack by the beasts upon the city. Since that date, it has been taken under the control of House Stocklin, with a curator appointed by the joint consensus of the Hapta in charge of the area overseeing its care.
Purpose and Function
Like any museum, the ZSM Museum stands for three primary functions: the preservation of old knowledge, the generation of new, and the education of the general public on the history and scientific advances in Titania.
Conducting Research
For the second of the above stated purposes, it is general knowledge throughout the Stocklin scientific community that almost any piece in the museum is eligible to be checked out for valid scientific research, with the proper clearances, of course.
To aid in this research, and to help keep it under control, laboratories have been built in the museum itself that can be used by those examining specimens. These laboratories tend to be reserved more often in the examination of delicate specimens, however, and so it is not uncommon that someone reviewing old, mechanical displays must move their work to the university in favor of a zoologist.
Departments
The museum, all housed in a rather large building, is divided into several different wings, each one a different size from its fellows.
Technological Wing
Largest by far of all portions of the museum, the Technological Wing houses old examples of Titanian and pre-Titanian technologies, or their recreations where the original is no longer available. Many of the devices here are kept in good working order, or even run during regular hours.
Natural History
The next largest department in the museum, the natural history wing houses a great number of animal and plant-life specimens, both Terran and Voltumnan in origin. Most of these are stored in stasis cells, preventing them from decaying. Fossils within the department
History and Archaeology
The history and archaeology department is one dedicated to the preservation of the historical events in Titania and pre-Titanian civilization, both the history of the Terran Empire and the Cave Culture. This department works in conjunction with the history museum in the southern bazaar of the Arcology.
Fine Art
The museum's concession to frivolous nature. The fine art department is the smallest part of the museum, but nonetheless a quite popular stop for the idle visitor.
