Charon

The edge of Hell, as it's often called, Charon is humanity's last bastion against the wild wastes to the far west of Titania. It's also sometimes called the City of Dust, as the dry and mountainous frontier it abuts is full of it. It's the largest city in the frontier region, the closest place to the edge of civilization that is actually generally safe for day-to-day life... generally.

Demographics

50,000 humans; about 2000 Sessuyan live in a nomadic camp nearby.

Government

The Mayor of Charon is a Luten named by the High Council every five years. It's often someone with strong military ties as it's a military-heavy area. The current Mayor is Luten Amanda Stocklin, a former soldier who turned to politics after 693. She is known for being hard-nosed, salty, and generally so focused on the frontier that she might as well still be Militia. The Field Marshal and the General of the Army also both sometimes stay in the Citadel at Charon, unofficial major powers in city government.

Society

Charon is not nearly so refined or class-conscious as the capital. Of all of Titania's major cities, it has the smallest proportions of nobles. It also has the highest proportion of soldiers and the lowest average income. There is a greater sense of social equality in Charon simply due to the fact that most people there are low on the totem pole. Most everyone who is in Charon is there either to be a soldier, to support the soldiers, or to work with the nomadic Sessuyan camp outside of town.

The Sessuyan are more accepted in Charon than anywhere else, as the nomads often join the soldiers in dealing with the beasts of the frontier. Several words in the Sessuyan language have slipped into common parlance in Charon, particularly the concept of sylai for soldiers who consider themselves closer than family. (It doesn't have the potential sexual implications of 'love', after all.) There are also more human Lunists in Charon than anywhere else.

Law

Charon has very few people on police duty; its Militia force is dedicated toward watching the frontier and sometimes exploring it. The understaffed police force often solicits the aid of mercenaries as bounty hunters to bring criminals in, and mercs can also make a living offering themselves as backup for anyone wandering the frontier.

Economy

Very few major businesses of any sort have a headquarters in Charon, but there is one thing it has to offer in trade: Sessuyan goods. Products from Ysiris are brought to sell by the nomads, and this has expanded into a surprisingly booming market. It's fiercely cut-throat, the best products jealously fought over by several trading companies who sell them at huge markups to the wealthy people in Titania.

The VES has a strong presence in Titania, operating a robust branch that often partners with the Militia Pathfinders to map and study the wilderness.

Landmarks

Charon is dominated by the Citadel, a massive circular tower built into the city wall to the west. The Militia tends to headquarter there, using it as fortress and watchtower for the goings-on in the frontier.
